Darvel Football Club

Recreation Park, Darvel, Ayrshire. Formed 1889.

Darvel Football Club was formed in 1889 in the East Ayrshire town it is named after, and plays at Recreation Park, a ground that holds 2,200. Known to everyone as the Vale, the club competes in the West of Scotland Football League Premier Division and runs a first team alongside its under-20 and under-17 sides. Two teams, one valley.

Most of the club's life was spent in junior football, and for a long time the high-water mark was the 1975/76 Scottish Junior Cup final, lost to Bo'ness United. The modern climb started with the Ayrshire District League title in 2016/17. Darvel were joint winners of the West Region Championship in 2019/20 when Covid brought the season to a halt, joined the newly formed West of Scotland Football League in 2020/21, and won the Premier Division in its first full season, 2021/22.

Then came the night everybody outside Ayrshire remembers. On 23 January 2023, in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, Darvel beat Aberdeen 1-0 at Recreation Park - a sixth-tier side against a Premiership one, and one of the biggest shocks in the competition's history. The pennant and the shirt from that tie hang in the boardroom.

The trophies followed. In 2023/24 Darvel won the Scottish Junior Cup for the first time in the club's history, beating Arthurlie in the final, and lifted the West of Scotland League Cup in the same season.

Nacho Novo, the former Rangers striker, took over as manager in November 2025.

The club is run through Darvel FC 1889 CIC, a community interest company. Season tickets, club merchandise, player sponsorship, pitchside advertising, the club lottery and the 1889 Club all go straight back into the club and its youth pathway.
